Rationale

The alarming extent and frequency of disasters in the country and the resurgence in mining in many regions present a very serious concern for the country. Studies have long showed geo-hazard maps and other vulnerabilities in floods, earthquakes, landslides and other natural calamities yet government continues to promote economic policies that are unsustainable and pose environmental threats for our people yet unprepared to deal with these risks.

While many environmental advocates have taken the task of bringing the environmental issues into the public debate to prompt government into action, a more strategic approach to address these challenges is through education. Particularly, transformative education being promoted by IBON provides an important framework on the role of education in the context of Philippine society. It is also imperative that the educational system ensure that environmental education is integrated in the basic education curriculum so that society can expect to have citizens who are empowered with their environmental rights and will ensure our environmental sustainability.

A concrete contribution towards this end is through this 15th IPED Annual Educators’ Conference. The conference aims to gather, educators—teachers, school administrators and other stakeholders in a conference that will provide a better understanding of the concept of environmental justice and its relevance to peace and development efforts in the country. The conference also expects that the meeting will provide the basis for further discussions on curriculum changes for transformative education.

Conference Objective:

The conference wants to contribute in building greater awareness and capacity in teaching environmental issues among teachers and school administrators for the benefit of students in elementary and high school who are the future generation.

Specific Objectives

1. Provide the basis for a common understanding of environmental justice as it relates to peace and development efforts in the country
2. Develop modules and methods in teaching environmental justice issues in the basic education curriculum and inside the classroom.
3. Consolidate the Education Forum for Development for future campaigns ahead.
Date and Venue

The conference is scheduled on May 1-4, 2012 at the Circon Businessman Inn, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. Participants are expected to arrive in the afternoon of May 1 and depart in the morning of May 4, 2012. Participants who want to depart at a later date must arrange for their extended stay at the venue separately.

Registration fee

The registration fee is P4,500 to cover for full board and lodging, conference function room and conference materials. For local participants, a registration fee of P2,200 to cover for lunch and PM snacks, conference function room and materials.

Travel arrangements

Participants must book their flights earlier to avail of promo rates and submit their itinerary to the conference organizers on or before April 13, 2012. Return airfare tickets cost Php4000. Early booking must be done to avail of promo rates.
